No funds for hills schools

2/09/2008 2:05:00 PM
SCHOOLS in the Dandenong Ranges have missed out on funding as part of the Federal Government's Healthy Active Australian Community and Schools Grant program.

Earlier this month, the Government unveiled a list of 190 schools and community groups that received more than $17.6 million of second-round funding for the program..

During a visit to Ferny Creek Primary School last Friday, La Trobe MP Jason Wood said he was disappointed schools in the Ranges missed out.

"It's nearly 12 months since Labor's election pledge to create an 'education revolution' and only two secondary schools in La Trobe have received any funding. Primary schools have received nothing."

Ferny Creek primary applied for $45,000 in June last year for a new fitness track which would include play equipment. Principal Matthew Coyle said the school was "very disappointed."

"A lot of work went into the application and we spent a lot of time ensuring it would fit in with the whole community".

Kallista primary principal Barbara Rose said she was "disappointed that there was not more funding available, especially since the program is a good one which encourages healthy living".

The Federal Government did not return the Journal's queries before deadline.
