A Dubbo taxi driver is ‘humbled’ to be awarded the Country Taxi Driver of the Year by the Taxi Council of NSW.
The winning driver Ray Horan - who once drove someone from Dubbo to Bathurst - has been a taxi driver for only three-and-a-half years.
Mr Horan was nominated by local resident Peter Davis and was tested for one month on his knowledge and direction around the town, his courtesy and what was happening across Dubbo at the time.
Three of Dubbo’s taxi drivers have been recognised in the awards.
While Mr Horan won, the honors of being a runner-up went to Col Morris and Greg Keen.
Mr Horan said he couldn’t reveal the funniest things that had happened to him while working.
“What happens in the cab, is better off kept there,” he said.
He can reveal however that he has had the chance to meet a celebrity sports person, Kieran Perkins, when picking him up from the Dubbo Aquatic Centre and taking him to the airport.
His most expensive trip was to Bathurst at the price of $450 and he said he meets a lot of interesting people from all walks of life.
A tip from Mr Horan for other cabbies in Dubbo is to be courteous, look after the passengers and give them a safe ride home.
The next step for Dubbo cabby winner Mr Horan is to compete for the State title of Best Taxi Driver.
The drivers received a $50 fuel voucher from Inland Petroleum and a $50 voucher for the River View Bistro at the West Dubbo Bowling Club.
