Bandits travel to Gold Coast for big days of golf

3/09/2008 10:10:00 AM
Dubbo-based Travelling Bandits have just returned from the Australian Social Golf Clubs Championships on the Gold Coast.

Daniel Harper, David Harper, Steve Tracey and and B grade winner Peter Tremble enjoyed three days of competition.

The trio played at Royal Pines, Sanctuary Cove and Palm Meadows Resort courses in an event that was run in three grades which saw the Harpers in A grade and Tracey and Tremble in B grade.

Tremble returned home as the B grade champion.

He started with a great score of 41 points at Royal Pines followed by a very tidy 36 at Sanctuary Cove - after starting with three wipes.

The last day at Palm Meadows saw Tremble one point from the lead and starting in the second seeded group for B grade.

All players struggled on a tough set-up with Tremble having to be content with 33, this however was enough to take the championship on a countback.

The shot of the championships was played by Tremble on the tough 18th hole at Palm Meadows.

After hitting his tee shot into the trees he found the best option was to hit his trusty seven-wood over trees onto the 10th fairway to give himself some sort of chance of hitting the green with his third shot to the par five.

Standing in the middle of the 10th fairway hidden by trees and having the crowd that was gathered behind the 18th tee wondering what he was doing, Tremble hit his three-wood about 210m over the trees between the 10th and 18th fairways across the water.

The ball hit the mound at the side of the green and popped up while running onto the green to give himself a 25m unlikely birdie put. From there Tremble casually two-putted for a 5/3 to secure his win. The funniest part of all this was Tremble’s lumbering impression of Sergio Garcia as he appeared from behind the trees to watch his three-wood finish on the green to the applause of the fellow golfers watching from the back of the green.

The other three members of the Dubbo group played ordinary golf to say the least and were glad to get home to familar surrounds.

David Harper has urged other Dubbo golfers to consider about entering next year.

“As a group we can fully recommend that golfers look for the next Australian Social Golf Clubs Championship and think seriously about attending,” he said.

“The event is wonderfully run by Michelle and this year attracted about 100 golfers despite the current economic climate.

“We had four days golf including a practice round at the venue of our choice, four nights accommodation with breakfast and lunch provided for about $1000 per person which also included a welcome party and a great presentation dinner on the Wednesday night.

“This group of golfers will be returning next year and we hope more Dubbo golfers can join in.

“Those who complain about our course, be thankful for what you have we played on courses that were not as good.”
