Macquarie’s Group 11 premiership grand final hero David Peachey has described his coming back to Dubbo as like a working holiday.
At Apex Oval on Saturday night, Peachey scored two tries for the Raiders in their first grand final victory in first grade since 2000.
For a man who has played football all over the world, Peachey was like a kid with his hands in the lolly jar as he celebrated with his team-mates.
He had every reason to celebrate after the Raiders defeated CYMS 14-6 after leading 6-0 at half-time.
On Saturday alone, Peachey had gone to extraordinary lengths to get to the game.
Working last week in Cairns, he travelled south to Sydney late Friday night and was up at 5.30am before flying into Dubbo on the morning of the game. He’s done that several times this season.
“This morning it’s been go, go, go. When I got here we had a meeting at the South Dubbo Tavern about the game plan and it’s worked well,” Peachey said after the game.
“The decision to come back to Dubbo was to pull off something like this and those expectations have turned into a premiership for a great football club.
“I wanted to give Jim Kelly (the coach) a hand, enjoy my rugby league and also continue working with the young kids in the western area.
“For us to do what we did tonight was great, for me to be able to pass on some of my knowledge in the game to these players makes me feel extra good.
“We’ve got Peter Boon and Damon Goolagong who have been around for a while, and Jim (Kelly) and Steve McLellan who have done a terrific job.
“It’s all been beyond my expectations. I just wanted to come back and enjoy my football.
“The other main thing that has been great was being able to work with the kids in the schools while I’ve been here in Dubbo.”
Peachey said as soon as Jim Kelly got a whiff of his retirement at the end of last season from South Sydney he was straight on the telephone to ask him if he would be interested in coming back home and having a run.
“I had the Peachey and Richardson carnival for schoolboys coming up and that would take up a lot of my time, so the opportunity to play with Macquarie was ideal,” Peachey said.
“It came from there and it’s been terrific - working with the kids during the week and then playing footy on weekends.
“South Sydney have also been terrific allowing me to promote South Cares as the ambassador, going out into the bush and helping to make some difference to the kids in the remote and country areas.”
