DUBBO DUCKS: Slim Dusty sang of The Pub with no Beer but last Sunday it was a case of the Ducks with no pool.
No swimming, but 25 of the Ducks’ best assembled at the Macquarie Sports Club to participate in the big charity day to raise funds for the Isaac Minney Appeal.
The Ducks, in association with the Macquarie club, organised this big fundraiser during which members and friends of both clubs contributed greatly to this worthwhile cause.
A full house of 196 bowlers took to the greens, while many more gave the tennis courts a real workout, trying to emulate (but failing dismally) the deeds of the rich and famous currently playing in a tournament nearly 20,000km away at Wimbledon.
An overwhelming success are the only words suitable to describe the event’s results and the total amount of money raised far exceeded the organisers expectations.
At the end of counting on Sunday night, an incredible total of $4210 will now be donated to the cause, a figure which was met with tumultuous applause from the large crowd in attendance.
Macquarie club stalwarts, Gordon Taylor and Allan Russell, welcomed Sally Sheehan, a principal of Lawler’s Family Pharmacy in Centro, to present the recipients of the $1000 prize money graciously donated by her company, with their well-earned rewards following the day’s activities.
Prize winners then showed extroardinary generosity by re-donating $805 of this amount back into the appeal.
Elaine Pearson had all the bowls results of the morning fours, afternoon triples and other pertinent information in her regular bowls column.
Unfortunately as far as the Ducks performances are concerned they are strongly advised to adhere to wearing speedos in future instead of dressing up mufti style trying to compete with the experienced exponents of the ‘Royal and Ancient’ game.
This statement is born out by the fact that of the 25 members who participated on Sunday, a miserly two only featured in the overall results.
Mel Giddings was a member of the winning afternoon triples team while John Wherritt secured a rester.
Lady associate member Daphne Dunbar won the afternoon spider.
It is worth noting that six Ducks, Messrs Sparkes, Everett, Twohill, Bahr, Attenborough and Ferguson, failed to obtain any cash handouts in the morning fours, doubled up in the afternoon triples to try and rectify this sad state of affairs.
The big winner on the day was little Isaac Minney’s Appeal.
The Ducks and Macquarie Sports Club members want to express their appreciation to all who attended for their largess on the day.
This Sunday the Ducks swim for the Golden West Holden monthly trophy and it is also July meeting date.
After the table staff had a rest day on Sunday, no doubt they will exercise their masochistic power when programming this week’s events.
The Apprentice advises swimmers in advance to exercise caution when approaching the table on Sunday.
